Guide To Buying Blinds

Thank you, for visiting 4YH Textiles. We hope that you will find this guide of some use when making your selection. Please note that our recommendations are based on the industry norms and our years of experience.

They are not definitive or set in stone and the final decision for the size or type of blinds that you need and the desired look you want to accomplish is yours and yours alone.

Types

We offer a number of different styles of Blinds.

Roller Blinds – Square Eyelet and Scallop Edge: - These blinds are made from a fabric which has been specially treated or stiffened and are operated by beaded side controls. All our ready-made roller blinds can be reduced in width.

They come complete with screws and universal brackets for easy assembly. All our corded blinds also come with a safety system which minimises the risk of strangulation by eliminating the potentially hazardous loop. Please note that the measurements quoted for the width of blinds do include fittings.

Blackout Blinds – Thermal Blackout: - are made from densely woven fabric and will effectively minimise the light entering a room. They are especially useful in bedrooms for children, shift workers who need to sleep during the day, light sleepers, or for south-facing bedrooms. Great just to pull down if you cannot see the TV or to be slightly lowered if the sun is annoying you (a rare occurrence in the UK).

They can be used behind curtains especially where you have chosen more decorative curtains, or you may prefer to use special blackout curtain linings. All Blackout Blinds also have thermal properties. All our ready-made roller blinds can be reduced in width.

They come complete with screws and universal brackets for easy assembly. All our corded blinds also come with a safety system which minimises the risk of strangulation by eliminating the potentially hazardous loop. PVC Venetian Blinds: These are made from PVC and can be effectively adjusted in a number of ways to control the light entering a room. They are great in all rooms and can be easily adjusted for increased privacy especially in bathrooms and toilets. They can be used behind curtains especially where you have chosen more decorative curtains.

The PVC blinds can be reduced in length and slightly adjusted in their width (max 2cm on each side). They come complete with screws and colour coordinated end brackets for easy assembly. Depending on the length chosen they also come with centre supports. When reducing the width of the blind you can cut the slats with scissors but we recommend you purchase a slat cutter which are available from most decent DIY Retailers.

Aluminium Venetian Blinds: –are made from metal and can be effectively adjusted in a number of ways to control the light entering a room. They are great in all rooms and can be easily adjusted for increased privacy especially in bathrooms and toilets. They can be used behind curtains especially where you have chosen more decorative curtains. The PVC blinds can be reduced in length and adjusted in their width (max 10cm on each side).

They come complete with screws and metal locking brackets for easy assembly. The amount of brackets you get will depend on the width of the blind you have chosen and should be evenly positioned along the length of the blind. When reducing the width of the blind you can cut the slats with scissors but we recommend you purchase a slat cutter which are available from most decent DIY Retailers.

We will shortly be introducing a wide range of vertical blinds. They will be available to purchase as complete kits or you can purchase the rails and slats separately. This is particularly good if you are just updating your existing system.

Size, Measuring & Fixing Advice

The widths quoted on our blinds are all approximate and include fttings where appropriate.

Please note that if you are fixing the blind inside a recess that you should measure the width at the top, the middle and the bottom as it is quite common for these measurements to vary and you can then plan accordingly.

You should also do the same with the drop as the measurements might again vary and you can then be aware that you will have to slightly adjust the way you t the blind system so it hangs properly.

All our blinds can be top and face fixed. While the supplier includes screws and plugs please check the surface you intend to fix them onto thoroughly first, as you might need to use different plugs and screws depending on the surface.

You can fix the blinds outside a recess.

Things to remember

1. A lot of windows especially UPVC windows have fixed air vents at the top. Please ensure that you x the blind taking this into account so the vent can be accessed as easily as possible.

2. You have taken into consideration the ease of opening your window. All windows are different and while they usually all work with blinds you should consider your own circumstances when fitting the blind in a certain position. Some houses have special re windows and again please ensure that the blind chosen works in conjunction with this.

3. Remember the handles on your windows. We have had people fitting blinds with the windows open and then when they shut them the handle makes a bulge in the blind as it has been fitted to tightly to the window.

4. When reducing the width of scallop edge or decorative eyelet blinds please remember to cut them evenly from both sides to ensure that the look is symmetrical rather than lop-sided.

All our blinds can be adjusted and all include instructions. Please take time to read the instructions and ensure you have the correct equipment available and if you need to adjust the blind a good clean working environment with plenty of space is essential, to ensure that you can do any necessary adjustments with relative ease.

While designed to be adjusted, please take your time and do not rush the job to avoid costly mistakes. When fitting the blinds please take into account the length as it could be a two person job especially on the wider ones.

Taking Care Of Your Blind

Fabric blinds can be dusted with a synthetic or feather duster, or vacuumed with the upholstery brush attachment in the same way as curtains and furnishings. Venetian blinds can be dusted.

Do not use soap and water. There are some specialist cleaning tools available for Venetian blinds which you might find useful.

Child Safety

All our blinds come with child safety mechanisms that must be installed to prevent the risk of strangulation should a child (or pet) become entangled in the cord, so it's imperative to keep cords out of harm's way.

Please use the relevant fittings which vary from cleats, p-clips or tensioning systems to keep cords out of the way and check them regularly.

Pattern / Colour Matching

Blinds especially fabric blinds unlike made to measure blinds are manufactured in large quantities, which enables retailers to offer a vastly reduced price compared to made to measure blinds.

Please note that if you buy more than one patterned blind that the pattern might not start or finish in the same place. If you are buying more than one plain/patterned blind it might be the case that they could come from different dye batches.

If you are only looking to purchase a single blind the issues outlined above will never come up or if you are looking to buy the same style/design of blinds for different rooms then that is fine.

We believe in telling our customers the positives as well as the negatives and if you let us know that you are looking to buy more than one blind for the same window/room we will do our very best to ensure a match where possible.

You can also rest assured that our Buying Team has invested a lot of time with our suppliers in ensuring that we offer a wide range of curtains at different price levels to suit as many tastes and budgets as possible and ensuring that the quality of the blinds is the best we can offer for the price they are being retailed for.

Being a small team all of our staff care about providing the best possible service to our customers so you can always be assured that we will work with you, so you can obtain the blinds that you desire for your room.
